My biography

I was born in Buffalo, USA in 1954, and grew up in the USA and in Spain (Madrid).

I hold university degrees from Goddard College (bachelor of arts in music and in

social sciences) and from New York University (master of international public

administration).

I moved to Oslo, Norway in 1987, and have been a naturalized citizen of Norway for several years.  I currently work as a manager

for the Norwegian Department of Social Security, where I supervise several advisors serving government agencies on health benefit policy,

Human resource management and work environment issues.

I have previously worked extensively in the areas of community and public relations, employment benefits and services,

peace and community education (including Amnesty International and American Friends Service Committee), civil and human rights,

translation, editing and graphic services as well as multicultural arts politics and issues. I have written proposals which have resulted in

new laws and public policies in both the USA and Norway.

I have arranged international arts exhibitions at reknowned art musuems in Scandinavia featuring artists from all over the world, advocated

the rights of immigrant artists in Norway and Scandinavia (both performing, literary and visual) and established a writers' forum and

publishing company for artists in Norway of non-Norwegian descent.

I have worked for many years as an activist (nationally and internationally) in many areas, including art/culture, social issues, health issues,

peace education etc.  I am well known in the Norwegian media, and have appeared often on television, radio and in newspapers as an artist and

as a spokesman (as interview object, have held speeches and written articles) on various social, arts and spiritual issues. I have represented

the Norwegian government and national organizations at several national and international conferences on multicultural issues, art and

hiv/aids (including the United Nations).

I have also translated publications and books for museums, government agencies and publishing companies in Norway

(translating from Norwegian to English).

I was a professional classical pianist in New York City for eight years, and studied

piano privately under several reknowned musicians including Arminda Canteros

(from Argentina), Jacob Lateiner (from USA), Berenice Lipson-Grüzen (from USA)

and John Ranck (from USA).

My first poetry book (Notes of a Madman, Winston-Derek Publishers,

Inc.) was published in 1987. I have since published Arcana and Other Archetypes (AIM

Chapbooks, Norway) in 2001, and Collected Poems and Stories (Cyberwit, India)

in 2005. I write poetry primarily, but have also written (and published) short

stories, and I have written and had performed theatrical works (in Norway).

[When I first moved to Norway I wrote theatrical works for the Blått Paradis

(Blue Paradise) dance theater company.]

I write mainly in English (my mother tongue) and in Norwegian, but have also written some poems in Spanish

and write/have published several works which incorporate other languages in my poems

(e.g. French, Arabic, Latin, Greek etc.).

I have published poems and short stories in several literary magazines (see listing below) in the USA and Australia, and in

international anthologies (including Taj Mahal Review December 2004 and June 2005, and Explorers 2005, India).

I have also worked as a professional visual artist in Norway since 1993 (painter), and have

had several art exhibitions in Norway and in Sweden. Examples of a few of my paintings

can be seen on my website ( www.geocities.com/adamdonaldsonpowell/paintings.html ).

I often combine my dedication to social issues and civil/human rights with my art, and have

both used my own art to raise consciousness concerning peace issues, hiv/aids, spirituality, cultural politics;

and have led several arts/cultural organizations in Norway that promote international artists, writers, actors etc.

in Norway, and otherwise in Scandinavia.

POETRY

New Poetry Cycle

FRAGMENTS

Dulled slivers of emotion

No longer entangled with

Words flutter and scurry

Out-of-sequence.

Once air-bound, the

Footloose fragments of

A life gone past seek

Resolution and release by

Eluding recognition and

Assuaging the sharpness of reality.

And quite relentlessly these

Now-transformed bits of

Parchment confetti find new

Definition by recreating history.

SHELTER

When dusk acquiesces

To the shelter of night,

Overpowering the

Songs of crickets and

Silent movements

Of creepy-crawlers,

A quiet calm

Overtakes

The ruminations of

My psyche

Allowing soul regression

To dance

In the matrix

Between experience

And remembrance.

ZODIAC

You and he and they

In opposition to

My circle of One.

The moon is in Fresno --

Long gone retrograde

And void of course.

BOUNDARIES

Peripheral lines

in my psyche

and yours

dance and intersect

with agreement

and understanding.

But crossed

boundaries

lead both

dogs and nations

to quarrel.

OF FOOLS AND KINGS

The tides of time

separate fools and kings

much as ocean waves:

swelling, crashing and

mixing water and sand --

and in a passing moment

one is indistinguishable

from the other.

ANTES DE LA MUERTE DE MI AMOR....

Yo pienso en ti

Y muero despacio dentro

De mis sueños.

Yo pienso en ti

Y se debilita mi corazón..

Mi sangre..

Mi alma.

Yo pienso en ti

Y toda lo queda son

La música,

Las palabras perdidas

Y quizás algunas lagrimas.

Yo pienso en ti

Yo pienso en ti

Yo pienso en ti

Y no puedo recordar

El silencio que yo conocía

Antes de la muerte de mi amor.

TAL VEZ

! Forza !

El amor

! Forza !

El sexo

! Forza !

Las mentiras

Y tal vez te encontraré

En mis sueños sueltos.

BOLERO MODERNO

No puedo llorar más...

la lluvia empieza

y la pintura vieja baila ...

bajo el cielo desnudo
