A history of Nature
By Anabella Rodriguez
Translated by Maria Cristina Azcona from the original in Spanish
In Indian cultures we can find a strong relation with Nature.
Indian people is a great observer as he builds his world around the natural diversity that is not easily findable in daily life. The Indian literary pieces bring to us these “flashes” from Nature and explain us life through description of animals and plants. Pemón culture is owner of this “natural richness” and at the same time of marvelous aesthetics . Pemón means “human being” and the name was given to this culture when missioners ask them about the name of their culture. Indians used that name “Pemón”meaning the mythological meaning of “human being” that they understood. A “Pemón” was for them like a “ citizen” in the greek-latin culture, where the Urbs or Polis were the unique world . To belong to this world implied to follow its traditions and virtues ( the famous greek expression areté). The Indians felt very proud to be Pemones.
Pemón language is nowadays talked by 20.000 people and is considered a part of Caribean languages. It is findable in sub regions Canaima and Gran Sabana, at the South East of the Bolívar State, Venezuela and also in some towns, in the Brazil frontiers. (a clasic novel, Makunaimá by Mario de Andrade, introduced the Pemón mythology in the modern discourse) and Guyana.
When we enter the Pemón world, we start to see the brightness of their literature and aesthetics with the magic conception of poetry as able to change the world and its values. The occidental literary genres cannot be used to understand this society
Where oral has a relevant role and value, because this is mainly an oral culture.
(The transcriptions to writen language are brought in later by the occidental culture).
Father Cesáreo Armellada, a catholic priest, is one of the main researchers on this language. He decided to classify this literature in two genres : Main Genre (large tales) and Minor Genre(poems and short tales). The Tarén belong to the Minor genre
And are magical invocations, similar to religious pray, that tell the origin of the Earth trying to mantain an equilibrium among human beings and Nature through the word.
The Tarén show deep thoughts and teaching contents in their tales. This piece, “Mawari Piapanitok Taremuru”, from the Pemón culture is about mythological characters that are extremely interesting and cautivating: the Mawarí. These wonderful beings cause storms and winds. Many people still believe that they live in the high part of the mountains (clouds that cover the mountain peak), other ones believe that they live in the rivers and the sea. In this “Tarén”, the Mawarí are bothered and molested by Tukui and Aruka (two tiny birds, similar to the humming bird), the Mawarí start a big storm because of their anger and rage, but cannot scare the small birds that confront them and defeat them with their songs and whistles that make the Mawarí stop their fury inviting them to laugh and smile.
Undoubtedly, this Tarén is a beautiful story about the way to reach the objectives without the use of violence. This is a Peace song. Otherwise, it offers a marvelous explanation to storms.

Tarén to pacify the Mawari
taken from Pemon language by Carmen Maria Yumira de Kamarata en Armellada Cesareo (1972) Pemonton Taremuru UCAB Institute for Historical research , Center for research of Indians, caracas Venezuela
translation from Spanish by Maria Cristina Azcona
The humming bird called tucusito,
And other one called aruká, bothered and
Made the Mawari get very angry.
They were wandering around some places
Where the mawari lived and they whatever, molested them.
This happened very far away on time
In the Piá times
The Mawarí grew mad;
Their anger was growing and growing.
Some Indian were going through that place, traveling
And while sleeping, they heard a great noise like a hurrican.
But Tukui and Aruká were not worried at all,
Although it was them the cause of Mawarí´s fury
The Mawarí started to prepare for war. But tukui and aruká
Simply said: -“Let the Mawarí come nearer, don´t worry at all”.
The Mawarí arrived like a tornado
In great number they shook the houses, they shook so much the houses that they seemed to fly
They were almost destroying all the houses when suddenly
Tukui came against the winds and sat on a branch set against the Mawarí.
In the same way,did Aruká and sat down on another branch.
Tukui and Aruka made the Mawari laugh of joy, with their sweetness
And instantly they loved their singing.
So, the Mawarí stopped their furious shouts
and winds turned to be calmed.
Tukui and Aruká said:
-When the Mawarí come full of anger and fury,
and when the ones who live in the waters are upset and get violent
I calm them down, oh yes, I make them happy with my singing,
And stop their thunder like voices.
Me, me Wai kuru piá Tarén-ta-venima-piá
Tukui said . And Aruká added: “ And I whistle to them while going to meet them
And to their very face when wind blows harder”.
And silently whistled saying “¡itú, itú! And added “Shut up” I make them stop shouting”.
